If you already have marker locations saved in a map file, you can import them into a marker type all at once instead of placing them one by one in the field. Imported markers show on the map on web and mobile, just like markers placed in the field.
You can upload any of these file types, one file at a time:
- Shapefile, zipped into a single .zip folder that includes the .shp, .shx, and .dbf files
- KML
- KMZ
- GeoJSON

Before you import
Check how the marker type is set to last. You set this when you create the marker type in Settings › Markers.
- Permanent markers stay on the map across growing seasons.
- Growing season and Time based markers belong to a season. Before you import, assign crops to the fields in the current growing season and make sure every point in your file falls inside a field boundary. Points that don't meet both conditions aren't imported.
Import the markers
- Select the Home tab, then open the map pane.
- Under the Markers header, find the marker type you want to add markers to.
- Select the Edit (pencil) icon next to it. The Edit markers pane opens.
- Drag your file into the box with the dashed border, or select the box to browse for the file on your computer.
- In Use shape file attribute as pin name, choose the column from your file that holds each marker's name. To let FarmQA number the markers for you, choose <Auto generate>.
- If any markers land in the wrong spot, select Move existing markers and drag them where they belong.
- Select Upload.
When the import finishes, you see Markers were saved and the new markers appear on the map.
Frequently asked questions
Q: I see "Some or all of the markers could not be imported." What happened?
A: For a growing season or time-based marker type, a point is skipped when it falls outside every field boundary, or when its field has no crop assigned in the current growing season. Assign crops and check your points against the field boundaries, then import the file again.
Q: I see "Shape file errors." How do I fix it?
A: The message lists each location that has a problem, such as a point missing a value for the attribute you chose as the name. Fix those points in your mapping software, then upload the file again.
Q: I see "The uploaded file is not valid, missing file." What's missing?
A: A shapefile upload needs the .shp, .shx, and .dbf files together in one .zip folder. Zip all three and upload the .zip folder.
