Upload field boundaries

If your field boundaries already exist as files — exported from other farm software, a GIS program, or an equipment display — upload them to FarmQA instead of redrawing them. Upload a single field yourself in the web app or send a full set to the FarmQA Support team to load in bulk.

Most upload problems come from the file, not the upload. Check your file against the requirements below before you start.

Check your file before you upload

Supported file types

A shapefile is always a set of files that work together. Upload the zipped set — a single .shp file on its own won't import.

What the file must contain

• Polygons only. The boundary must be a closed area. Lines, points, and GPS tracks — such as a recorded drive path or an as-applied pass — don't import as a field.
• One field per file when you upload a single field. A field made of more than one piece is fine.
• Boundaries only. Leave out management zones, yield data, prescriptions, and other layers. Export the boundary on its own.
• A clean shape. The boundary can't cross over itself, and the pieces of a multi-piece field can't overlap.
• Location information. For a shapefile, include the .prj file. It records the file's coordinate system, which is what places the field in the right spot on the map.

If your file came from another program

Most farm software, GIS programs, and equipment displays can export boundaries, but not every export meets these requirements. Common problems:

• The export saves the boundary as a line or a set of points instead of a polygon.
• One file holds a whole farm or operation instead of a single field.
• The export bundles boundaries with zones, yield, or other data.
• A shapefile is missing its .prj file, or its files weren't zipped together.
• The boundary has small self-crossings or overlapping pieces that aren't visible at a normal zoom level.

If an upload fails, open the file in a GIS program to check it. Shape won't upload or save: geometry errors walks through finding and repairing problems in QGIS, which is free.

Upload a single field

1. On the Home map, select Add in the lower-right corner. The Create fields pane opens.
2. Drag your file or zipped shapefile into the Create fields pane.
3. Check the outline of the field on the map. If it's in the wrong place or the wrong shape, see Check your file before you upload.
4. Select Save.

Upload many fields at once

The FarmQA Support team can load many fields in one pass and place each one in your organization structure. To prepare the file:

• Include every field in one file, with one shape per field.
• Include a column that holds each field's name.
• To place fields under the right grower and farm, include columns for those names too.
• To assign crops during the load, include a crop column.
