Manage growing seasons

A growing season groups your field assignments, scouting reports, and recommendations by year, so you can work in one season without your data from other years getting in the way.

FarmQA doesn't roll your account into a new season automatically. Someone on your team creates each season and sets its state, and getting that right is what keeps your data landing in the right year. This article covers creating a season and setting its state.

Create a growing season

1. Select the Settings icon, then the Growing seasons tab.
2. Select Add in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
3. Choose how to build the season:
   • Duplicate growing season copies the season highlighted in blue on the left-hand side of the screen, bringing over its crop assignments and field shapes.
   • New growing season creates a blank season. The boundaries you see are your master field boundaries, so none of them appear in the FarmQA mobile app until you assign crops.
4. Fill in the season details:
   • Name — typically the year of the season.
   • Description — optional.
   • State — see Set a growing season state below.
   • Start date and End date — the date window the season covers.
5. Select Save at the top of the screen.

You can also reach this page from the growing season selector in the upper right-hand corner of the web app: open it and select Add at the bottom of the menu.

Which field names a new season carries

A new season takes its field names from the master field record, not from the season you copied. Duplicating brings over crop assignments and field shapes, but names come from master either way.

This catches people out when a field was renamed mid-season. Renaming a field from the web app changes it in the current season only, unless the person renaming it also applied the name to the master field record. If they didn't, the new season shows the old name — a year after anyone made the change.

Check your field names while you're setting up the season, before you assign crops or send anyone to the field. Correcting a name here is a few minutes; correcting it after a season of scouting reports and recommendations carry the wrong name is not. See Edit a field name 

Set a growing season state

1. Select the Settings icon, then the Growing seasons tab.
2. Select the growing season you want to change. It highlights light blue.
3. Use the State dropdown to set the state.

The three states:

• Draft — a season you're setting up but aren't ready to open to your users. Think of it as the crop planning state. You can reach a draft season from the web app and edit its data there.
• Active — the current season, where scouting data should be landing. Most accounts have one active season at a time. Only active seasons appear in the mobile app.
• Archived — a season you're finished with. You can still reach it and all its data from the web app.
