Field names change. A lease turns over, a grower renames a quarter, or the name was entered wrong at setup. You can correct a field name from the web app in a few steps.
The decision that matters is whether the new name applies to the season you're working in or carries forward to every season you create afterward. A checkbox on the edit form controls that, and if you leave it clear, next year's season comes back with the old name.

Rename a field
- Check the growing season selector in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and confirm you're in the season you want to change.
- Locate the field, either on the map or with the Search feature in the top right-hand corner.
- Select Edit Field.
- Type the new name in the Name field.
- Select Update master field name to apply the name to the master field record as well. Leave it clear to change the name in this season only. See the next section before you decide.
- Select Save.
How the name carries across seasons
FarmQA holds a field name in two places: on the field as it exists in the growing season you're working in, and on the master field record that every new season is built from.
Leave the checkbox clear and the rename applies to the current season alone. The master record keeps the old name, so every season you create after this one pulls the old name back in.
Select the checkbox and the rename is written to the master field record along with the current season. Every season you create from that point forward carries the new name.
Either way, seasons that already exist keep the name they already had. The checkbox changes what's ahead, not what's behind — to correct an earlier season, switch to it and rename the field there.
Select the checkbox whenever the name change is permanent, which is most of the time. Leave it clear only when the name belongs to this season alone, such as a parcel you're farming for one year under a different name.
Frequently asked questions
Q: I renamed a field last year, and this season it's back to the old name. What happened? A: The rename was saved to that season only. New seasons take their field names from the master field record, which still held the old name. Rename the field again with Update master field name selected, then correct any other seasons that need it one at a time.
Q: Does selecting the checkbox fix seasons I've already created? A: No. It updates the master record and the season you're in. Switch to each earlier season and rename the field there if you need those corrected.
